The number that decides the price — and appears in no quotation

Most buyers compare unit prices. That is the expensive mistake. What matters is not what a plant costs at the nursery but what it costs on your site, and freight sits in between.

An articulated trailer of 13.60 m holds 33 pallet spaces. How many plants fit on one pallet therefore decides how many trucks you pay for — and that figure varies between nurseries by more than a factor of two, depending on how they pack, whether they use rings and whether they can stack.

Measured, not claimed: on an enquiry for 1,000 Thuja at 140–160 cm we asked five nurseries the same question. The answers ranged from 12 to 30 plants per loading unit. The supplier with the lowest unit price needed three trucks; another managed with one, and was considerably cheaper overall.

What you get

Several nurseries approached in parallel, each in their own language, with packing density as a compulsory question.

A comparison by landed cost — goods plus pallets plus freight, divided by the number of plants. In that order, never by unit price.

One load, one delivery date, one invoice, even when the goods come from three different growers.

A fixed price with a binding delivery window that starts when payment is received, and a photographic record of loading before the truck leaves.

Where we deliver

To EU member states. Within the Union a plant passport under Regulation (EU) 2016/2031 and an invoice are sufficient — no customs, no import declaration, no phytosanitary certificate.

Named: Germany, Sweden, Denmark, France, Austria, the Netherlands, Belgium, Poland and Italy. Other member states on request; the legal position is the same.

We make no commitment regarding Switzerland or Norway until we have checked the import conditions in detail. Both are third countries with their own rules for woody plants. A delivery promise on a website is a promise you could rely on, and we do not make it before we have verified it.

VAT

We buy ex works and arrange transport ourselves. For deliveries within the EU this makes it a triangular transaction under section 25b of the German VAT Act: you receive an invoice without German VAT and account for the acquisition yourself. We need your VAT identification number; ours appears on every invoice.

If the nursery delivered directly to your country instead, it would become a chain transaction requiring registration there. That is precisely why we keep the freight in our own hands.

When we are the wrong supplier

Below roughly half a loading unit — in practice a few hundred hedging plants. Under that, our effort for tendering, freight scheduling and load inspection outweighs the benefit, and a nursery near you will be faster and cheaper. We will tell you so rather than send a quotation you would be better off declining.

And if you are in the Netherlands or Poland, you are closer to the source than we are. Much of Europe’s nursery production sits there, and buying direct saves you our margin.

• Species or cultivar, and the size range
• Number of plants
• Delivery address with postcode
• Preferred delivery period
• How the truck will be unloaded on site — forklift, ramp, or nothing at all
• Your VAT identification number, for deliveries outside Germany

German and English are spoken. Enquiries in Polish, French, Swedish and Danish are welcome in writing; we will answer in English unless you ask otherwise.
